In the words of Joseph H. Pilates, pioneer of contemporary pilates, who expressed his ideals and rationale quite well . . .
“Physical Fitness is the first requisite of happiness. It is the attainment and maintenance of a uniformly developed body as well as a sound mind, fully capable of naturally, easily and satisfactorily performing our many varied daily tasks with spontaneous zest and pleasure.”
“Logically man should develop his physical condition simultaneously with the development of his mind.”
“[Pilates] is designed to give you suppleness, natural grace and skill that will be unmistakably reflected in the way you walk, in the way you play, and in the way you work.”
“[Pilates] is complete coordination of body, mind, and spirit. Through [pilates] you first purposefully acquire complete control of your own body and then through proper repetition of its exercises you gradually and progressively acquire that natural rhythm and coordination associated with all your subconscious activities. “
“[Pilates] is not a system of haphazard exercises designed to produce only bulging muscles . . . nor does [pilates] err either by over developing a few muscles at the expense of all others with resulting loss of grace and suppleness, or a sacrifice of the heart and lungs. Rather, it was conceived to limber and stretch muscles and ligaments so that your body will be as supple as that of a cat. . . “
“Moreover, such a body freed from nervous tension and over-fatigue is the ideal shelter provided by nature for housing a well-balanced mind that is always fully capable of successfully meeting all the complex problems of modern living.”
“Self-confidence, poise, consciousness of possessing the power to accomplish our desires with renewed lively interest in life are the natural results of the practice of [pilates].”
“The science of [pilates] disproves that prevalent and all-too-trite saying, ‘You’re only as old as you feel.’ The art of [pilates] proves that the only real guide to your true age lies not in years or how you THINK you feel but as you ACTUALLY are as infallibly indicated by the degree of natural and normal flexibility enjoyed by your spine throughout life.”
“This is the equivalent of an ‘internal shower.’ As the spring freshness born of the heavy rains and vast masses of melting snows on mountains in the hinterlands cause rivers to swell and rush turbulently onward to the sea, so too will your blood flow with renewed vigor as the direct result of you faithfully performing the [pilates] exercise.”
Joseph was definitely on the right track. Learning to move more efficiently means living better with greater freedom of movement and zest for the activities of life. Everyone can learn to live better through a purposeful pilates EQ practice engaging movement geared toward the design and maintenance of an ultra fit, happy and fine, body, mind and spirit.

The truth is, American culture puts a high priority on our outward appearance often sending us to seek all sorts of treatments from Botox to Liposuction. We spend endless hours at the gym in pursuit of the perfect physique and yet the essence of our well being often eludes us in our craze to attain outward aesthetic perfection. In reality, the health and fitness of our body is a holistic matter. Our outward persona and robust presence stems from all aspects of our entire inner being, body, mind, heart and soul. Wellness begins on the inside and then encompasses our whole life, inner and outer being.
ENLIGHTEN YOUR BEING
WHOLE BODY, WHOLE MIND, WHOLE SELF
It is my aspiration to promote and facilitate a pilates movement praxis that embraces the whole individual offering a whole body, whole mind, whole person approach to fitness and well being. In my personal pedagogy and mentorship approach I focus on the overall efficiency and functionality of the energized moving body which serves each and every one of us in all our daily activities.
With an emphasis on breathing and core control, proper posture and alignment, balanced muscle tone and unity of body and mind, pilates practice develops sleek, strong, fit bodies and facilitates enhanced body awareness. Enhanced awareness and optimal mobility ensures better wellness and an improved quality of life for all individuals of many myriad and diverse lifestyles. When we feel better physically and mentally we respond better to all life’s challenges whether that means responding more mindfully to our usual diurnal routine and or adapting positively to unanticipated encounters and situations.
Here is something else to think about. It is estimated that more than 50% of the American population will likely experience some form of injury that will infringe on their quality of life. Most of these injuries are not the result of major accidents but the outcome of pronounced muscle imbalances due to poorly executed, habitual movement patterns.
Improve Flexibility, Build Core Strength & Prevent Injury
Consistent pilates exercise works to correct such debilitating imbalances which helps to prevent and eliminate the potential hazards of mindless physical repetition. Developing overall flexibility, core strength and spinal suppleness doing pilates exercise movements provides a solid foundation of support for all life’s activities whether work related obligatory tasks or participation in optional athletic entertainments like physically demanding sports and virtuosic classic or urban dances. A stronger more supple physical vessel also provides the constitutional bearing necessary to prevent acute injuries and ensures better odds when undergoing rehabilitation after an accident. A fitter body affords us a potentially higher quality of living through better balance, coordination and ease of movement, more energy and improved functionality, enhanced agility and overall sense of wellness. Essentially practicing pilates helps keep us in a better mood all the time regardless of circumstance.
